Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is an overwhelming gastrointestinal emergency, which primarily afflicts premature infants born weighing less than 1500 grams. Despite years of investigation, the etiology remains unclear, and accepted prevention and treatment strategies are lacking. In this key lecture, Dr. MacKinlay outlines the role of minimally invasive surgery in case of necrotizing enterocolitis and volvulus.
