The ratification of the Abdominal Wall Section (AWS) as a specialty of surgery by the UEMS in 2020 has opened new horizons for hernia and abdominal wall repair in Europe. It is anticipated that the UEMS AWS diploma will become a respected qualification for surgeons throughout Europe. The need to provide a reliable and respected knowledge base to prepare candidates for the examination is self-evident.

Methods of active, adult learning to achieve learning objectives are used where appropriate, including problem-orientated learning, task-based learning, case-based learning, reflective learning and performance improvement CME.
