This video demonstrates a laparoscopic nephrectomy for a non-functioning kidney. The surgeon uses an extraperitoneal approach to resect the kidney. The retroperitoneum is entered below the 12th costal margin and the space is expanded by a 500 mL balloon. The trocars are then inserted and the dissection is started by taking Gerota's fascia off the psoas. The kidney is slowly mobilized towards the hilum. Once adequate mobilization is achieved the hilar vessels are divided and the kidney is removed by use of a bag through the previous subcostal incision.
