Peritonitis and failure of medical therapy represent the most common indications for emergency operative interventions in the treatment of sigmoid diverticulitis. Guidelines for the most adequate operative strategy, however, remain controversial and continue to evolve based on recent comparative reviews of surgical outcomes.
