Congenital diaphragmatic hernia is characterized by a variable degree of pulmonary hypoplasia associated with a decrease in the cross-sectional area of the pulmonary vasculature and alterations of the surfactant system. There are 3 basic types of congenital diaphragmatic hernia, namely the posterolateral Bochdalek hernia (occurring at approximately 6 weeks of gestation), the anterior Morgagni hernia, and the hiatus hernia. In this key lecture, Dr. Haddad presents an overview of this condition.
